austin visit and nostalgia
so... now that we've survived the apocalypse, here are 10 random thoughts from my christmas trip to austin
1. southern hospitality is genuine and really shined when dealing with a dead car at the airport
2. on day 2, my mother hinted/reminded/nudged me at least 6x about my relationship status. yea, no pressure, thanks mom.
3. doomsday was a hoax. i celebrated with ramen. it was delicious.
4. dealing with temperatures ranging from 30-80 in a single day is more frustrating than living in constant cold
5. never go to the austin trail of lights on the last saturday it's open
6. people may change, but the friendships will always remain
7. the only ones who can make me yell are still my parental units. oops.
8. the one year i didn't focus much on presents, i got pretty cool ones
9. "this is my family... is small, and broken, but still good. yah, still good." - from lilo & stitch... quote really resonates with me lately (mine's not broken, bit cracked recently)
10. i suddenly have the urge to learn to play guitar

30 before 30 update
i have forgotten about this list. time for a progress check, since there is less than a year left
1. start a 365 photos project - done! started 8/1/12 and still going!
2. move to a new city - done! seattle on 6/9/11
3. learn another foreign language - because the random words of german i learned recently doesn't count
4. travel to europe - done! germany and austria on 10/27/12
5. ride a hot air balloon - i want to do this at the albequerque balloon fiesta, not sure if i will make it tho
6. read 2-3 more books in the song of ice and fire series - done! finished the 3rd book in the series 9/8/12
7. visit austin - done! first on 12/24/11, and few times after that
8. make mojito cupcakes - done! on 4/17/11
9. acquire a navy blue coat - except i have plenty of coats from living in madison... hmm
10. acquire a touchscreen device (ex. tablet, smartphone...) - done! kinda inherited an iPad, bought a smartphone a few months later
11. finish writing my list of 100 things to do before i die (currently at 77) - occasionally i pick this up...
12. replace my dying dell laptop - done! on 4/3/11 with a shiny acer
13. create a new website/blog of some form - eeeh, lacking ambition
14. go sky diving - ideally in hawaii
15. figure out my favorite kind of wine - done! dessert wines, for now
16. buy a hat at sacred feather (one of madison's longest standing stores on state street) - done! on 4/30/11, though i never wear it
17. acquire a new camera - done! Canon PowerShot S100 on 7/23/12
18. bake for a bake sale - done! 4/18/11 bake sale for an office fundraiser
19. consolidate burned media into 1-3 TB hard drives - done! sometime 2011, now all on my giant 3TB drive
20. (related to above) organize my music files - in progress
21. sell some of my crafts - done! at the same bake sale fundraiser above
22. build a small board game collection - done! one of my bookcases is now filled up
23. organize/display my vinyl toys - done! in my 2011 apartment
24. win money at a casino poker table - done! at Harrah's in New Orleans 5/7/11, though lost it immediately afterwards
25. finish making 1000 cranes - sorta in progress
26. attend an anime convention - i might change this to "a comic-con" and call it done for emerald city comic-con
27. finish epic mickey - but i haven't played my wii in almost a year...
28. pick up a new physical activity (ex. team sports, martial arts...) - done! joined a kickball league, on/off rock climbing
29. memorize the chinese pinyin system - because i still make it up
30. paint my ansem figurine - not motivated at all for this one
completed 18/30 since 4/3/11
wow. my mindset was very different in early 2011. i'd scratch out several of these and go with completely different ones. intrigued by how quickly my interests change

So putting aside from the strange glasses I found... the food at Uchiko was quite delightful. From tempura nasu and chicken karaage, to jar jar duck and pork jowl, finishing off with some sushi, rolls, and ika yaki... om nom nom nom
